Solar + Battery vs Battery-Only: Which Makes Sense for Your Home?

You don't need solar panels to benefit from a home battery. Here's how the two setups compare in 2026 — and how to tell which one fits your home.

Two ways to win with a battery

A home battery makes money two ways: storing your own solar generation instead of exporting it for pence, and buying cheap off-peak electricity to use during expensive peak hours. Solar + battery does both. Battery-only does just the second — and in 2026, that second trick alone is often worth having.

The case for solar + battery

This is the full package. Panels generate around 3,400 kWh a year on a typical 4kWp system; without storage you’d use maybe 35% of it and export the rest for 5p–15p a unit. Add a battery and self-consumption jumps past 75% — you’re displacing 24p grid electricity instead of earning 10p exports. Combined savings of £600–£1,100+ a year and a 5–8 year payback are typical.

Best for: anyone with a suitable roof. If you can fit panels, the combination beats either half on its own.

The case for battery-only

No suitable roof? Heavily shaded? Leaseholder complications? A battery on its own still works the tariff angle: charge at overnight rates (often 7–9p on smart tariffs), discharge through the 4–7pm peak. A 10 kWh battery shifting a full cycle daily can save £400–£600 a year depending on tariff and usage — with a much lower upfront cost than a full solar system and an installation that’s done in a day.

Best for: homes that can’t do solar, high evening-usage households, and EV owners already on a smart tariff.

The deciding questions

  1. Can your roof take panels? If yes, solar + battery almost always wins long-term.
  2. What’s your tariff? Battery-only economics live and die on the gap between off-peak and peak rates.
  3. How much do you use after dark? Big evening usage favours storage of either flavour.
  4. Planning to expand? Stackable systems (5–60 kWh) let you start battery-only and add solar later — the design just needs to anticipate it.

Our honest take

We sell both, so we have no horse in this race: if your roof is good, do solar + battery together — one scaffold, one install, one integrated design. If it isn’t, battery-only is no consolation prize; it’s a solid investment in its own right. Either way, size it from your actual usage data, not a sales script.
